What Causes Painful Cysts On The Body?

I have cysts throughout my body. The ones on my lower rib cage can get painful sometimes. I have a few long tubular ones on the left back side of my waist. One on the right side of my right knee. A couple mid back to the left of my spine. A few I can feel at the top of my stomach. They will get bigger and then smaller depending on what I am eating. I am careful to keep sugar levels down and eat very little or no bread. I had lost seventy pounds about three years ago so am very careful about getting good balanced food into my body. My kidneys get sore often and I get very bad gas and have bowel movements more often. I have had blood tests done and my sugar levels are good but I have struggled to keep my iron and thyroid up. I am taking supplements recommended by the doctor. In regards to the cysts he told me that that was very common for someone my age but hasn t looked into it much further except to recommend removing one but I would rather not go that route if possible because in our small community we have so many people going in for operations and a very high percentage are getting infection even before they leave the hospital. \I m concerned as to what to do. My age is 53 and I am going through menopause right now. I hope you can help me figure out what to do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Cysts or skin lesions in the body commonly occur due to infection, clogging of sebaceous glands (oil glands), or around foreign bodies, such as earrings, ornaments worn to which the skin is allergic. It can also be caused due to autoimmune diseases, malabsorption syndromes, vitamin B12 deficiency, etc. Cysts are generally harmless but if it gets panful, it is better to get a biopsy done to rule out any malignancy. Avoid any food that triggers the growth of cysts / lesions. Avoid addictions if any.

To avoid the formation of gas, avoid constipation. Stay well hydrated and take laxatives at bed time. Take food rich in vitamin B12, you can also take supplements. Sometimes, warm compress help to get rid of cysts. Do not touch or scratch the cysts. For warm compress, you can use a soft warm, moist washcloth to ease discomfort. However, get clinically examined by a dermatologist, you may cosmetic treatment. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
