What Causes Painful Lump In The Anal Region?

I noticed this morning that I have a small pimple that is located on the skin close to my rectal area. It is not in the rectum (around the hole); it is on the side skin beside it. It seems like it may be a bit swollen and it is a little painful, but not too, too bad.
