What Causes Painful Lump On The Back Of Head After Injury?
I hit the back of my head on a table when my 4 year old unexpectedly ran up to me and jump into my arms ...thankfully she was fine!!!!! Although I broke the fall and took a blow to my head when I fell backwards. I iced it immediately for a few hours. This occurred 4 days ago and I still have a painful lump. If I press it I get a shooting pain on certain parts of my head. My insurance is not the best so I haven t gone to the doctor. Should I just give it time or should I be concerned?
You might have got a contusion / hematoma there. Take ibuprofen tab 400mg three times a day after food (if not allergic) for 3 days to see the response. can continue for 2 more days as needed. Meanwhile continue icing. If not start getting down by then, if it increases in size, or you develops fever, we will need an antibiotic / drainage too as this may indicate secondary infection there. For this your doctor will guide you. Note that, it is the pain and tenderness that disappear first, but the swelling may take 2-3 weeks, no need to worry.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
