What Causes Painful Lump On The Top Of Kneecap?

I have a pea-sized bump appear overnight on the top of my knee cap. It hurts a little, particularly when touched. It moves with my skin when I move my knee or when i move the skin around without pain. On the edge of the lump there is a small round red/purple spot. What is it?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

If appeared overnight, without any history of trauma, this suggests an insect bit reaction. It will disappear in a couple of days. Till then, you can take acetaminophen for pain and Levocetirizine for any itching. See your doctor if this becomes progressively red, hot or tender, as these indicates secondary infection and need for antibiotics.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
