What Causes Painful Menstruation After Taking Birth Control Pills?
Hi, I m on birth control and have been for the last several years due to the fact that I had horribly painful periods and for a while had to deal with cysts on my ovaries. Yesterday and today I had a bout of heavy spotting between periods, almost as if I was on my normal flow. Earlier this evening I had bad cramping with the spotting and when I went to the bathroom after, I realized what looked like a massive clot on my pad. Being the oddly curious person I am, I checked it out and it squishy and not very bloody. I was curious to know if you had any ideas as to what may have been the cause of this odd thing.
Usually oral contraceptive pills do not pause heavy and or painful menses, on the reverse they are helpful in those kind of situations. However, a skip doses, irregular intake or other issues with dosage alteration can pause similar types of clinical scenes for sure. In my clinic, I do recommend primary management with anti spasmodic as dicyclomine or mefenamic acid with tranexamic acid to control the acute issue.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
