What Causes Painful Red Spots On Either Side Of The Soft Palate?

I have two bright red areas with some white striations on my soft palate. They are on each side of the soft palate. The areas are painful.. I thought it was thrush so I have been treating with Nystatin 4x/day for 5 days now and it'snot improving. I have also had a severe cold, sinus infection and have been using a saline nasal rinse. The same thing happened in november. The nystatin resolved the red areas then, but not now.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain bright red areas over the soft palate along with severe cold and sinus infection seems to be due to inflammation in the throat and does not seems to be due to fungal infection, therefore anti-fungal medication like Nystatin will not help..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a throat swab culture can help in confirming the exact cause of infection..
You can be advised to take a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin, anti inflammatory painkiller like Motrin, decongestants like Phenylephrine, mucolytics like Ambroxol..
You should do warm saline gargles and steam inhalations..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods and drink plenty of warm water..
Suck throat lozenges..
