What Causes Painful Swelling And Tenderness Between Toes?

I am a very young 65 year old in good health. I have started yoga classes in the last month, going to class 3 times per week and gradually getting back into it. I have pain, swelling and tenderness on the top of my foot between my 2nd and 3rd toes. I was wondering if this could be some sort of stress fracture in the metatarsals in that area. I did not notice anything specific in yoga class that caused pain in my foot. I also know a little bit about Morton s Neuroma as this is the area where the pain is located. It is not painful on the bottom of my foot......just on the top where there is swelling and tenderness

Hello,

It is very good to know that you have been exercising and doing yoga. Stay active, avoid sedentary lifestyle. You are having painful swelling and tenderness between the toes precisely 2nd and 3rd toe. Be gentle with yourself while doing yoga and stretch exercises, warm up first and never over-exhaust yourself. Do exercises comfortably. Your symptoms may be indicative of toe bruise, trauma, injury or fracture. Medical conditions that present with such symptoms are RA, OA, gout, neuroma, peripheral neuropathy, etc.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP / Orthopedics. Get X-ray and imaging tests done to detect / rule out injury, fracture, etc. Get other blood workouts and urinalysis (C/S and R.E) done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms. You will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, you are suggested to apply an ice pack, keep the food under rest for a couple of days, keep your affected foot elevated on a stool while sitting and on a pillow when on bed. Control your blood glucose and blood pressure at all cost. Take food rich in vitamin B6, B12. You can also take supplements.

If detected with gout you will be advised strict diet control. Wear footwear that fits you properly and is comfortable. Use shoe pads if needed. Maintain healthy weight. In case you experience pricking sensation or numbing in your toes, get clinically examined by a Neurologist. Get NCV and other tests and investigations (CT / MRI) done. You will be treated accordingly. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
