What Causes Painful Swelling Behind The Ear?

My entire right ear feels sore, especially when I touch. Behind the ear is swollen as well as the inside of my ear. Totally dry no discharge of any kind, don t see any redness or anything. When I open my jaw the right side hurts as well. Can t sleep on it. Been like this for 3-5 days now, very very painful and having sleeping problems because of this. Should I see a doctor or is this normal and will go away on it s own?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to an ear infection. The swelling behind the ear is probably related to a reactive lymph node. I suggest using anti inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen to relieve the inflammation. I also suggest using an ear drops with antibiotic. Of the symptoms continue, you may need oral antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
