What Causes Painful Swelling Below The Knee?

My wife fell about two feet earlier today and went down on her knee. She now has a large swelling just below the knee and is in pain. She has full motion of the knee but it is painful. She is now laying down and using an ice pack. The swelling has gone down slightly. What is the next step?

This is Housemaids knee or infra patellar bursitis. Apply ice, avoid kneeling. Take pain killers. Keep the limb elevated.
