What Causes Painful Swelling In Toe Post Foot Surgery?

I had foot surgery and had big toe joint replaced and pin in toe next to it 36 days ago. It is still swollen and get red quickly when down or I try to walk on my heel. Doctor pulled pin yesterday and cleaned scabs off from when staples were removed. Very painful. Been changing bandage every day and now he gave me silverdean pads to cut and put over wounds with non stick cause pads but this thing hurts badly at night. Is the pads better?

Hello,

Swelling is normal after surgery, its the first stage of healing (inflammatory phase). You should continue to take the antibiotics and pain relieving medicines that you have been prescribed for better and faster healing. It is good to know that the staples are removed and you have been changing bandage everyday. You have to take precautions so that the wound does not get infected, infection will delay healing and cause discomfort.

Take care of your hygiene, clean the wound and be careful not to hurt it. Since dressing with silverdean pads causes pain and discomfort at night, you may apply silverdean ointment at night for relieve. Silverdean pads are given for better healing and to prevent infection, However, if the pain does not subside even after taking NSAIDS, Combiflam, one SOS when needed, you should get a follow up examination done to rule out formation of hematoma.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
