Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Painful Urination While Treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?
My husband has been diagnosed with BPH and was prescribed Cialis and was put on an antibiotic and was feeling better. This was prescribed by the emergency room doctor. We do not have insurance so we made a follow up appointment with another doctor and they prescribed Bactrim for one month but called and said no sign of infection. He continues to take the Bactrim however he is having painful urination and slow urine. I am not sure if he should discontinue taking the Bactrim or not
hello concerned wife,i read your query and understand your concern.
yes, bactrim has been known to know painful urination is some cases though they are not frequent.painful urination and slow urine stream can also attributed to prostatitis and urinary tract infection in this case.
chances are that your husband is having a mild uti(sometimes no sign of infection) or an acute prostatitis
since cialis is already been ongoing ,i would recommend continuing the same, and would also recommend to get a urine culture and sensitivity done and since bactrim tolerance is poor with your husband and instead can be started on norfloxacin or ofloxacin twice daily for a long period of time till infection subsides.
If necessary, antibiotics can be switched after seeing the urine test results.
you can also try giving him syrup citralka 1 tsp in half a glasss of water twice daily which will also help.
hope it helps and wishing your husband a speedy recovery, good day
