A year ago almost to date I broke my radius, ulna and wrist. I have metal plates and screws on my radius and ulna. I ve had no problems till a week ago I have constant pain and swelling around the plates. Starting 2 days ago my hand and fingers have been feeling like its going to sleep if it s rested for any time period except ita very painful from my wrist to fingertips. It feels kind of like bad circulation. Is this normal for the procedure that I had?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pain and swelling are normal symptoms post surgery. You can take painkillers or anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen or NSAIDS / parcetamol to manage pain & swelling. Infection may cause swelling & pain, to avoid it take the antibiotics as prescribe. Stop smoking, cut on alcohol or addictions if any. If pain & swelling are associated with fever you need to visit your treating surgeon & get a follow up examination done. It may be infection or any other pathology. Get treated at the earliest. Use your affected hand for light, pain free activity. Do not lean on your affected hand, do not drive and do not lift any weight.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
