What Causes Painfully Swollen Finger After Being Bitten By A Dog?

I was bitten by a dog on my right index finger resulting in a deep puncture wound in the soft tissue. There was a mild infection at the wound site initially but cleared up after a few days. This occurred about six weeks ago. A couple weeks ago the entire finger began to swell and is tender to the touch. The swelling is over the entire finger. None of the doctors seem to have any idea as to the cause, and have adopted a wait and see attitude. Any thoughts about a possible cause?
