What Causes Painfully Swollen Index Finger?

The index finger on my left hand has been swollen & warm for several months. When I bend the middle joint of that finger, it sometimes sticks (requiring me to use the other hand to unstick it) and bending that joint is horribly painful. This just began a few months ago.
