What Causes Palpitations After Severe Cough?

My 4 year old was coughing a lot, in vegas, had headache, felt warm , gave ibuprofen 5ml at 8 pm felt better, threw up at 11:30 pm, coughing stopped, now his heart is beating fast, gave him a few sips of water, he asked if it s water. Should I take him to emergency room for fast heart beat?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Most of the cough syrups contain active ingredients like salbutamol which can cause palpitations and rapid heart rate. Generally, it is a transient response and will settle by itself.

If the palpitations persist long, better to consult a pediatrician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
