What Causes Palpitations Along With Tinnitus?

My heartbeart has been throbbing in my head for over a week. So loud it is difficult to fall asleep. I feel like i am drinking plenty of fluids, however, my lips get very dry and swell if i dont guzzle water night and day. I have only had a couple hours of sleep each night. I am not a smoker, haven’t had alcohol since February 4,2018, do not do caffeine except a little green tea once in a while, am about 30 lbs overweight, even though i try to exercise a couple times a week - xc skiing and bike riding (haven’t exercised in two weeks because i feel so crummy with this heart palpitation). I have had this before when under high stress, and believe it is anxiety related. Any recommendations on how to calm this dowm? Thank you so much, Melanie

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tinnitus is common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However, it this lasts for longer period then it should be evaluated.

Tinnitus can occur due to causes like chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, acoustic neuroma etc.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, X-ray, MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly. In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like tricyclic anti-depressant like Amitriptyline, anti anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as multivitamin supplements can be advised.

Wish you good health.

Hope this information helps.
