What Causes Palpitations And Elevated Heart Rate?

hi..i have been waking up in the middle of the night with with my heart racing and pounding fast 105 beats per min and lasted 4 hrs .it happend in the past but i would wake up and it would stop go to normal.now its happend every night to everyother night.also afyer work it seems my heart wants to keep right on going with a pounding heart hrs after work.i went to the doc.but with no health insurance no test were done he gave me a heart rate reducer which works for the most part but some times even with that my heart will be norm.rate but pound when it beats or when i move positions in bed it races and pounds really fast for about 10 sec the settles down...any info helps thanks..

You have mentioned your complaints as pounding and fast heart rate. It would be much better if you had mentioned your age, blood pressure and other medical diseases if you had any. These symptoms you have can be of trivial cause like simple anxiety or panic disorder or sleep apnea. But it can be of serious cause too.

It would be better if you get to your physician and get your ECG done. If ECG is normal he might advise you to do Holter monitoring, which is ECG for continuous 24 hours. He might also advise you Echocardiography to see any abnormality with heart. It is also advisable to do your Thyroid function tests as well to rule out any hyperthyroid disease. Cardiology consultation may be required too.
