What Causes Palpitations Upon Waking Up From Sleep?

Hi, I am a 66 yr old female. I experience rapid heartbeat when I awake from sleep. It is noticeable when I am laying on my right side. If I am laying on my left, it is not noticeable. This has been going on for just a few months. I saw my physician in July and thought at that time it might be positional or orthostatic hypotension as I sometimes had some dizziness. I have not been experiencing dizziness for the past month and a half. I have a small tricuspid valve regurgitation found during a stress test a few years ago. I have chronic migraine for 30+ years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my clinical experience, the rapid heart rate only when waking up from sleep is usually anxiety related. I would suggest deep breathing exercises, YOGA, relaxation techniques and sound uninterrupted sleep of 7-8 hours to clear the issue. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
