What Causes Palpitations While On Metoprolol?

Last night my heart started beating very fast, skipping a few beats once in a while. I am taking Metoprolol 50 mg each morning and simvastatin 10 mg in the evening. There is no pain. Heartrate is 89 (usually sixty). I am supposed to fly tomorrow to South America, a 5 hours flight. Any advice?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, he dose of metoprolol can be increased to double if problem persists after discussing with your cardiologist however a 24 hours holter monitoring and a baseline EKG might be needed to see the kind of tachy arrhythmia you have been encountering. A thyroid functions profile should also be done. If beta blockers doesn't control the heart rate, rate limiting calcium channel blockers like diltiazem or verapamil may be used as alternative.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
