What Causes Penis Skin Discoloration While On Niftran?

hello doctor, my husband had uti on March 20th and the doctor treated him with sulbacin for a fortnight and then followed by niftran 100 mg twice a day for twenty days. End of niftan doses, he got light fever n loose motions, which got cured without any extra medicines. But his penile colour has changed to purple from pinkish red. Can that be side effect of niftan?

Hello,

The penile skin color changes do indicate nitrofurantoin induced side effects and must be withheld from further drug intake. Consult your doctor for replacement of drug and further guidelines. Till that time, following measures will help you
- Local part cleansing with antiseptic liquid or soap
- Avoidance of masturbation or sexual intercourse if active
- Use aloe vera gel, lavender oil, turmeric paste for ayurvedic healing properties
- Control of blood sugar to prevent secondary bacterial infection
