Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What are causes of periodontal cysts? I have one which will be removed this coming week. It is benign. My oral surgeon mentioned this is very rare and could have been growing for years. Could it be a cause of lupus or connected to it in some way? Usually, many of my medical tests state there is/has been inflammation but no one could identify where. I also had skin cancer (basal) removed 6 mo. ago. Any ideas to enlighten me would be great. Thank you.
Periodontal cysts are generally seen to originate from the same cells and tissues that are responsible for tooth formation. However lupus or any other conditions are not seen to cause Periodontal cyst however hormonal factors are seen responsible and documented in literature.. It is commonly benign and can be removed surgically as well as the bone defect caused due to the surgical removal of Periodontal cyst will heal gradually.. So do not worry about it and proceed further..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
