Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What is Perioral? and Where does it come from, what causes it, and what can be done to get rid of it? I have a friend who's son get this from time to time, and can't get rid of it. It comes and goes, never to stay but right now is having a bad time with it.
As per your complain, Perioral means around the mouth that is the area that surrounds the lips. Perioral dermatitis is a kind of skin rash that occurs around the mouth. It can be caused due to disturbances in microbial flora over the skin, bacterial infection, nasal and topical steroids, flouridated toothpastes, harsh chemical cosmetics, poor facial hygiene, and hormonal imbalances.
I would suggest you to consult a Dermatologist and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and advise you to apply topically ointments containing Doxycycline, and Metronidazole. You can also be advised oral intake of Erythromycin. Ointments containing Azaelic acid, Pimecrolimus can help. Avoid any skin cosmetic or steroid ointments..Avoid excess sun exposure, use gel based sunscreen lotion.
Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks and regards, Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
