What Causes Persistent Abdominal Pain Inspite Of Taking EnteraGam For Ischemic Colitis?

I have had continuous searing pain in my left abdomen for over a year, since a bout with ischemic colitis following a back surgery. I was hospitalized for ten days and on a clear liquid diet plus egg custard for 45 days. My 1st gastroenterologist said it will take a long time for the nerves to settle down. After a year, I went to another Gastro doc who said basically the same thing but also prescribed Enteragam and IBGard. After nearly a month, I m still in excruciating pain and still have intractable diarrhea. My PCP is unconcerned about my slightly low platelet count, slightly elevated white blood cell and bilirubin counts. Is there anything (test, treatment, diet) that can resolve this? I am running out of patience.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of developing ischemic colitis after spinal surgery, undergoing treatment under the care of a Gastroenterologist and took second opinion of another Gastroenterologist.
Still in pain, loose stools and so on.
First of all get a colonoscopy and biopsy.
MRI or CT Angiography to substantiate the diagnosis.
Stool tests for 3 consecutive days.
Antibiotics and Metronidazole course since white cell counts are raised and if stool tests are suggestive of intestinal infection.
Probiotics.
Identify the foods and beverages, factors like anxiety and stress and control of these will help you further.
If the medical line of management does not help then take an opinion of a Gastro Surgeon too.
Consider and get investigated for any autoimmune disease and get treated if found to be positive.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
