Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Persistent Abdominal Pain Post Antibiotic Treatment For Diverticulitis?
i recently had a flare up of diverticulitis with an 1 cm abscess. I was admitted to the hospital for 2 days and given antibiotics iv, then released with two weeks of oral antibiotics - augmentin. I finished the antibiotics last wednesday. on saturday i started to have a different kind of stomach pain, which has continued and the last few days i have had a very full feeling in my stomach, allover abdomen pain and no appetite.
Prolonged use of antibiotics causes change of the normal intestinal flora which increases the chances of superimposed fungal infection and other bacteria to flourish which in turn may cause drugs induced enteritis and colitis. Check stool if it persists colonoscopy may be necessary.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
