What Causes Persistent Abdominal Pain With Vomiting And Diarrhea?

My husband who is 55 y/o white male in normally good health is having lots of diarrhea with stomach pain and some vomiting tonight. He had a heart ablation 12/06/16 and was put on Nexium and Eloquis. He also takes a low dose aspirin and montelukast ( for asthma). He began to develope diarrhea and increased stomach pain after around the 3rd week post op. He saw his cardiologist the 5th week post op who changed him from Nexium to Prevacid. Last week since he was feeling no better we ( he and I) decided to stop the PPI and begin taking probiotics. This past Monday he was feeling bad enough that he went in to see our primary care nurse practitioner. She advised checking for C. Diff. My husband was able to get a stool sample Tuesday night and took it in Wednesday morning. I know we might not get those results for a few days yet. In the meantime he seems to be getting worse. He does better during the day, but at night he frequently wakes up with a lot of diarrhea and occasional vomiting. Tonight is worsening still with more diarrhea and vomiting than before. I am concerned that he is getting worse while we wait. Do I need to take him to ER? Any other suggestions?

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hi,

Severe diarrhea can at tomes cause loss of sodium and potassium and need intravenous infusion. If he is really weak and maybe becoming incoherent you should take him to the ER.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshita,
