What Causes Persistent And Severe Cough Along With Vomiting Up Of Clear Mucus?

Hi, I have insurance BC/BS Federal I am 74 year old female, never smoked , diabetic type 2 under control, having current problem with a total knee replacement in 2007, but current problem is pulmonary ??? I started coughing up mucus about 6-8 weeks ago, but just keeps getting worse, mucus is very thick and yucky but clear sometimes white and foamy. My Drs. Associate on a Friday evening prescribed Levaquin and A dose Pak of prednisone. I have used all of the prednisone and Levaquin and am also using a nebulizer and was having to take 3-4 Tx per 24 hr period. Sometimes the coughing and mucus and gagging til throwing up clear mucus and water has lasted 6 1/2 hrs until I didn t think I could get another breath as I was so worn out. Thankfully it stopped. I keep having these episodes and need at least 10 mg of prednisone to get relief. However I took the 10 mg and then had another bout of coughing and spitting up the mucus this coughing is a lot of coughing probably twice in a minute. I have a Dr but he gave me Breo-does nothing for me. I have been on Lansoprazole for many years take 1 twice a day nebulizer Tx if needed and a bottle of Nasacort. I think I am very sick and these meds are not working. I am very disappointed that my Dr is not really doing tests to find out what is wrong with me. What could I have????

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you are suffering from coughing since 6-8 weeks you are suggested to get clinically examined in ER or by a GP. You should take swab and sputum tests, blood workouts & imaging (X-ray chest, CT, MRI) tests to detect laryngitis, asthma, bronchitis or any developing COPD. You can continue to take prednisone prescribed by your treating doctor. Take vitamin E (Evion-400), once daily for ten days. Take steam inhalation two to three times a day.

You can take cough syrups with mucolytic twice daily. Give voice rest, avoid gossiping or talking too much. Antihistamines are effective, you can take it for relief. You may need antibiotics (oral or intravenous) depending on the severity of your clinical condition. Take semi solid food like oat meal or porridge and stay well hydrated. Cut on addictions if any, take adequate sleep.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
