What Causes Persistent And Severe Productive Cough At Night Time?

I have a very deep cough that is worse when I lay down at night. I also have a thick feeling of something that won t go down or come up and seems to be hung in my throat. Sometimes I cough up yellow phlegm and the cough gets so bad that I feel like I am going to gag at times. Any ideas about what this could be? I have been to the doctor and have been taking levaquin for 6 days and some cough syrup with codeine in it. The cough does not seem to be getting any better.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Consult a pulmonologist and get evaluated.
Night cough has to be evaluated thoroughly to look for possible causes like tuberculosis.
A sputum culture is required to look for pathogen.
As of now you can take expectorant cough syrups for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
