What Causes Persistent Brown Spotting?

Hi I ve been spotting for several days now, I d say over 3-4. It s dark brown and persistent. When I wipe down there there s always a little brown residue. What could this mean.? I also must state that I have been regularly taking birth control pills but in about September they switched my pill from ortho Tri cyclen to tri previfem
