What Causes Persistent Cough Along With Yellow Sputum?
I have a persistant cough with mucus that was yellow and is now white. Have 500mg of amoxicillin, now on day 4 and see no results. Had a cough with sinus infection 2 months back but noticed that cough persisted, now back again, but worse. Exhausted from the coughing, running nose that wont stop, but is clear. I am 64yr.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Persistent cough with yellow sputum can be a sign of a respiratory infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections, but if your symptoms persist after 4 days of treatment, it may indicate that the infection is resistant to this antibiotic. It is important to follow up with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of your cough and whether a different antibiotic or treatment plan is necessary.
Other possible causes of persistent cough include allergies, asthma, acid reflux, or smoking-related lung disease. Your healthcare provider may recommend further testing or imaging studies to help diagnose the cause of your cough. In the meantime, you can try to manage your symptoms by staying hydrated, getting plenty of rest, and using over-the-counter cough suppressants or expectorants as directed.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
