Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Persistent Cough And Shortness Of Breath Despite Taking Medications?
I have had a persistant cough for over 12 days. 10 days ago I went to the doctor and got an antibiotic AMOX/K CLAV 500 MG twice a day for 10 days. All my other symptoms sore throat, fever ETC.. have gone but the cough continues to linger. The phlegm is clear, but I do experience shortness of breath quite frequently which has increased the use of my inhaler. What could this be?
It seems you had viral infection of respiratory tract with super added bacterial infection, which responded to a course of broad-spectrum antibiotic like Amoxy-clav. Most patients usually recover in 1 week, although cough may persist 1–2 weeks longer. Cough is self-limited. Subacute cough (3–8 weeks in duration) is a common residuum of tracheobronchitis, as in “post-viral tussive syndrome.”
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
