What Causes Persistent Cough At Night?

Hi my seven year old daughter has a president cough, but only at night when she s going to bed it continues three out the night and into the morning when she gets ready for school. She says she stops coughing when she gets to school. What could be making her cough like this and what can I do to sooth her at night?

Thanks for posting your query.

Cough that happens only during night could be due to following causes.

1. Post nasal drip: It means that her nasal secretion trickles down the throat when she lies down.

2. Gastro esophageal reflux : is a condition where acid in stomach reflux upwards and goes into the throat and lungs causing cough.

3.Asthma.

She needs to be tested for the following conditions.

First start her on Tab Montair lc every night for two weeks , if there is a significant improvement then it indicates post nasal drip . In that case consult a ENT doctor for the treatment of post nasal drip.

If there is no improvement then she can be started on Anti reflux medicine like Rabeprezole+domperidone , improvement confirms gastroesophageal reflux disease as the cause.

If no improvement then she needs to be started on Inhaler for asthma and after starting inhaler if there is significant improvement it confirms Asthma as the cause of her cough.
