What Causes Persistent Cough Followed By Gagging Sensation?
Hi, I was wondering if you had any ideas about what could be going on with me. I am 22 years old and in healthy condition. Over the past year, I have had a gagging sensation stronger than usual and notice it at least 4 times a day. I feel as if there is something around where my tonsils are or right under where you can see into the back of your throat if you shine a light in your mouth. My doctor took a quick look and told me it was in my head but I can t stop thinking about it. Its a cough that turns into a gag most of the time. any chances of cancer or would I notice this already? I have had no weight loss or any real trouble swallowing. I smoked hookah socially in high school and my freshman and sophomore year of college.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely due to laryngopharyngeal reflux. This can cause such symptoms. Taking proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole and motility enhancers like domperidone for long term will be helpful for this. Esomeprazole is available as over the counter in brands like Nexium. Avoid fatty, greasy and fried foods. Carbonated drinks, alcohol ,smoking and excess coffee should be avoided also. Raise the head end with little more with additional pillows. Have meals at least 2 hours before bed time. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
