After having a non productive cough for three weeks he was diagnosed with pneumonia [xray taken] He was on a z pack for 5 days and now a week after he is still having coughing spells [terrible] during the day and at night. He s taking mucinex and robitussin dm . He was on phenergan with codeine but that was no more effective than the robitussin. General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The cough can sometimes last for up to 6 weeks but if it is persistent then he should be evaluated.

It is possible that he may need to be reviewed because additional medication may be needed.
A short course of oral steroids may be needed if there is a reactive lung component to the coughing.

I hope this helps
