What Causes Persistent Cough While Suffering From Pneumonia?

I had pneumonia 4 weeks ago, had persistent cough since then. Started having slight pain in my rib cage last week. This morning I coughed(not hard) and something popped in my ribs under my left armpit. Went to the doc and was diagnosed with inflammation to the cartilage. I am still coughing up mucus and the pain is extremely sever! Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain? I m taking naproxen 500mg and it doesn t seem to help!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent cough while suffering from pneumonia which seems to be due to severe upper respiratory tract infection and due to poor immunity of body you are highly susceptible and prone to infections. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to start with course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. For now do warm saline rinses , take rest. Avoid taking cold beverages. You should take mast cell stabilizers to prevent from infection. You should consult pulmonologist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. You should get an x ray of the chest. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for 10 days along with mucolytic agents. Go for complete blood count and platelet count to rule out any hidden systemic pathology. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
