What Causes Persistent Crackling Noise In Ear?

I have a crackling noise coming from my right ear. Is is worse with noise from the television or music. It is getting worse and very annoying. Should I visit a doctor..? Should I be concerned about this? My work involves a earpiece connected to a radio and I normally wear this in my right ear.
