Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i have had diarrhea for three weeks now and have recently been to the er for dehydration because of it. I have tried to change my diet...although no changes happened prior to the start of this... i take pepto bismol like it s candy and no matter what i do it won t go away. There is no infection as the er took a blood sample to confirm this. They recommended that i see a gastroenterologist and get a colonoscopy. Is this my only option?
Diarrhea can be caused by many conditions and the colonoscopy helps diagnose or rule out some of them. Thus, if the gastroenterologist recommends it, I would say you have to have it done. Other tests to be done are TSH, a blood test for gluten intolerance, stool test for ova and parasites, stool antigen for giardia, stool culture, etc.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
