What Causes Persistent Diarrhea Despite Taking Medication?

I have had diarrhea for the past 3 days on and off. I took pepto and it stopped some on the first day then came back so then I took Imodium to stop it and now after a day it s back. I feel fine until my stomach starts cramping and I have to go again. What could it be?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The most likely cause is an infection. Viral or bacterial infection are the most likely causes of infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

Normally the infection would clear up on its own with only fluids, rest, pain medication if needed.
Medication to decrease stool frequency such as the lomotil and pepto bismol that you are using, can also be used.

You should hold off solid food till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms. Use fluids to replace any loss with the diarrhea.

Probiotics may also help , either on their own or using yogurts with probiotics.

I hope this helps
