What Causes Persistent Edema In The Legs Of A Lupus Patient?

Lupus was diagnosed 23 years ago in Guadeloupe during sun exposure. It was a cutaneous lupus Bullous. He was treated in metropolitan France by corticosteroid therapy. 4 years after, in 1998, the lupus became articular. I had osteonecrosis in my major joints, shoulders, knees, hips, ankles. Raynaud s phenomenon has appeared in that period also. After several stays in hospital, rheumatologist and immunologist have advocated the establishment of prosthesis for two reeds and both shoulders. I refuse artificial limbs and today I live with my pain that is sometimes unbearable and require total rest. So I stopped working after the birth of my son three years ago. My condition has degraded. Three months after childbirth I made a meningoradiculitis chickenpox. And today, I still suffer, but I live with my illness. Since my varicella I edema along the legs. I do not understand what it is. My doctor says it is linked to treatment. What do you think ?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

There can be various reasons for edema legs as
- Effects of previous steroid therapy
- Lymphatic circulation disturbances
- Immune related antibodies affecting peripheral vessels of medium size
- Associated cardiac condition hampering venous return due to compromised cardiac pumping
- Protein deficiency
- Others
It requires a systemic evaluation of multiple parameters with supportive investigations to stamp a particular underlying cause and then manage in accordance to that.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
