What Causes Persistent Fever And Cough In A Child Despite Taking Antibiotics ?
I have a 3 year old who went for flu mist 30 days ago. He ran a fever 2 days afterwards. We gave him doses of Tylenol and Motrin and fever subsided for a day or two then s low grade fever came back. We took him to pediatric who diagnosed him with bronchitis. He prescribed antibiotics for five days and our son still continuously ran a low grade fever. After 2 more weeks of low grade fever with no other symptoms we took him to ER. They said he had a ear infection. We went thru another round of antibiotics and afterwards his low grade fever has persisted another 10 days on and off. He now has a mild cough and running nose. We went back to pediatric who did blood work and everything was perfect, especially white blood cells. My thoughts was a lower respiratory infection that s taking its course but I m just not sure. When he up and moving fever goes down and he acts fine. When he lay down low grade fever comes. Please advise.
Understanding your concern. As per your query your child have persistent fever and cough despite taking antibiotics which is due to viral infection leading to respiratory tract infection. I would suggest you to visit pediatrician first once and get it examined and start treatment after proper diagnosis. Urgent care visit is not needed as it will take 3- 5 days for viral to get relieved. Give full rest to your child with sound sleep. You should do warm saline gargles 3 to 4 times a day. Take ibuprofen one tablet twice daily. Take cough expectorants. Drink lukewarm water throughout the day as it can provide relief. Give soft foods to child to avoid irritation to the throat. You should take steam inhalation. Apply mist humidifiers in room. Get blood test done to detect level of infection. You can give Meftal P to child for fever.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
