What Causes Persistent Fever And Episode Of Unconsciousness?
Hi, my son is 17 years old. He has run a fever ranging from 101 to 104 for 3 days with no explanation. We took him to the hospital because he passed out and was unresponsive for several hours. EMTs checked his sugar which tested at 50 so they immediately gave him glucose causing his sugar to go up to 207. Once at the hospital they rechecked his sugar to determine the first reading may have been inaccurate. They did a cat scan, did a strep test, swapped his nose to check for a viral infection and ran a lot of other test from his blood work. They also took a urine sample. Please explain as to why this happened, all his test results were normal. Could the fever have been a result of him growing?Concerned Mother
Hello! Thank you for writing us here ma'am. What I'm suspecting is some underlying cause in his pancreas. His condition is called hypoglycemic shock and it could be because of high insulin in his body. You should go for investigations for his insulin levels and also make sure he is having plenty of carbs in his diet to avoid such episodes of unconsciousness.
Best regards, Dr Gunjan
