Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 70 yo father has been doing up to 102 of fever with a strong head hache since Wednesday after-noon. The fever drops for a few hours and then starts again. The day before (last Tuesday) he had a big diner with chicken and fried calamaries and since then he hasn't slept much and it seems that it all started from there... Could he has some type of food poisoning? Mind you he never had symptoms of nausea nor did he vomit nor had diareha. Should we go to the hospital or should we observe him for another day or two?
My father is in a relatively good shape. Although he had a small operation on one of his elbows 3 weeks ago. The stitches look okay and it does not look like there is any infection.
He stays covered when he does fever cause he's cold... should we force him to remove the blanket? :) He just took two 500mg Tylenols and he's now at 102.4...
He is using:
- 1 Avalide 300 / 12.5mg per day
- 1 Lipitor per day
- 1 Jamp-a.s.a EC 80 mg per day
- twice a day Jamp-citalopram (20mg)
- 1 Alprazolam (0.5 mg) per day when not sleeping:: he's been taking one per day for the lsat 4 days since he is not able to sleep.....
The cold sensations are due to the chills that can occur with high fever, but if he bundles up , he would further increase his temperature. He needs to cool down. This would be achieved with the tylenol given but he may want to take a tepid bath as well and dress as cool as possible.
Since he only has a headache with the temperature, it is unclear what is the source of the infection. It would be best, since his temperature is very high, to take him to his doctor to be assessed as soon as possible.
I hope this helps

What Causes Persistent Fever And Headache?
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic It is not likely food poisoning. This would be associated with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. The cold sensations are due to the chills that can occur with high fever, but if he bundles up , he would further increase his temperature. He needs to cool down.
