What Causes Persistent Hiccups Post Chemotherapy For Bile Duct Cancer?
my husband had an endoscopic procedure, bile duct Stint He has bile duct cancer stage 4b, and had chemo the next day. he developed intractable persistent hiccups two days after chemo. He still has them but they are also causing other spasms in his esphogial network. Day two of thorzine (5mg) still alot of trouble,
** Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern and possibilities which gave to be kept in mind are:
1. although hiccups are usually benign but persistent hiccups can lead to exhaustion, eating difficulty and affecting the quality of life thus one possibility during chemotherapy which should be kept in mind is 'dexamethasone' drug [corticosteriod] which is prescribed as antiemetic drug given prior to procedure, thus is not necessarily due to antineoplastic drug, thus one should review all medications and non drug related factors.
2. thorzine [chlopromazine] is given for persistent hiccups but if not controlled by oral therapy then administer either as IM or give slow IV with patient lying flat in bed.
3. An effective method to get relief is: try holding your breath and sip & swallow some liquid [to the point when feeling of drowning sensation is there and then stop sipping and take a deep breath and blow. Repeat the same procedure for recurrence.
