What Causes Persistent Knee Pain When Involved In Regular Sports Activities?

My son is a basketball player. He has been complaining of pain in his knee. Seems like the big tendon in front. The Patella I think. Probably for two weeks, on and off, but more regular pain recently. It was especially sore tonight after practice. Do we need to make an appointment asap or should we just treat with ice and pain medicine. He hasn t missed practce or games due to the pain, but it is getting worse

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your son might be having a muscle pull which will get resolved with rest.

He can apply Diclofenac gel to the area and also can apply crape bandage. If symptoms worsen, then go to a local doctor and get an MRI done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purnima Sharma
