What Causes Persistent Lower Back Pain In A Diabetic Patient?

My husband is diabetic and has had a lot of ongoing pain in his lower back on the right side. It is below his back rib area. He is not a complainer but I can tell he is in a lot of pain. This has been ongoing for a couple of months and has progressively became worse the last few days.

Hello concerned wife. Thanks for writing to Hcm
i understand your concern regarding your husband's back pain who is a known diabetic

A few other details, would have helped:
his age? any other diseases?any history of fall or trauma?
his profession?how long does he have diabetes and what medications he is on?other medical and drug history, etc??

coming to query, please understand back ache is a common complaint amongst diabetic patients here.
I would recommend him to have strict diet regimen, continue taking oral hypoglycemic drugs/insulin and maintain HbA1C below 6.5 ensuring diabetic control.

another non medical measure is to start working out-strength training and weight training and this will strengthen muscles of the torso and back and give pain relief.

anti-inflammatory drug like celecoxib and medicine like gabapentin can be taken if pain is unbearable and when necessary ,limiting to twice a day but dont make it a routine..

diclofenac gel application with warm cloth presses will give relief.

transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation also helps a lot
also ask him to practise meditation and yoga.

hope it clarifies your query and hope it helps him out.
good day
