What Causes Persistent Lump Under The Chin Of A Toddler?

Three days ago my 3 year old son was hit under his chin on the right side of his face right under the jawline by his 2 year old brother. There was little crying and they continued playing. Now tonight there is a noticeable marble sized lump in that area that seems hard at times then softer at times. It had little movement to it. There is also no bruising of the skin just noticeable inflamation that was not there for days after. He has no fevers and acts fine, eating and acting normally. Only bothers him when we touch it. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The lump under your child's chin may be a lymph node that has become swollen in response to the trauma. Lymph nodes are part of the immune system and can become swollen when the body is fighting an infection or inflammation. It is also possible that the lump could be a cyst or abscess.

If the lump does not go away on its own in a few days or if it gets bigger, it is best to have it checked by a pediatrician. The doctor may recommend further tests, such as an ultrasound or a biopsy, to determine the cause of the lump. In the meantime, you can apply a warm compress to the area to help reduce any inflammation and discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relief medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may also be helpful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
