What Causes Persistent Pain Below Rib Cage And Back Inspite Of Taking Prednisone?

Hi. Several weeks ago I woke up with pain in my side, below my rib cage, along with a swelling sensation in throat. Two weeks ago the pain peaked, at which point I started taking Nexium. I consulted a doctor and had blood and urine tests that came back negative. The pain in my side went away. However, a back problem that has persisted for nearly a year flared up, a pain that is in close proximity to the side pain and which worsens when I do things like cook. Today I started prednisone, which in the past alleviated the back problem. However, I am experiencing a lot of pain now in my side, under right rib cage, a sort of clenching feeling with some sharp pain. Any ideas of what s going on? Thanks.

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have persistent pain below rib cage and back inspite of taking Prednisone. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like indigestion acid reflux , kidney stones , pancreatitis , rib damage or gallstones. I would suggest you to eat light and non spicy , eat small and frequent meals and eat at least one hour before going to bed . Also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . If condition doesn't get well then consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order ultrasound along with other test and physical examination . Doctor may refer you to orthopedic surgeon for rib damage or nephrologist for kidney problem .
