What Causes Persistent Pain In Arm After Undergoing Spinal Contusion?

On june 17 I was injured in dirt bike accident. I have a spinal contusion. C2 and C3. I left emergency after about 70 hours because I could not get sleep in the hospital because your crammed next to patients like sardines and only a curtain between. Anyhow I have no idea what to do. How long to wear my neck brace. It will be four weeks on wednesday. My arms are still in a lot of pain. Not as much as three weeks ago but I was told my neck would be fine in 3 or 4 weeks. I can t seem to be able to see the nuero surgeon who finally figured out was wrong because I refuse to be realeased from emerg. The first two doctors said I was fine and I said your missing something. Boy did they. The second doc called his nuero surgeon friend who knew right away and ordered an MRI and neck brace put back on. How do I see someone here in Kelowna. I asked the walk in clinic doc. That was last Wednesday. Have not heard anything.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

Short answer: It will take 4 to 6 weeks to recover

Detailed answer:
Thank you for asking.

Any injury to spine requires lot of time to recover. If it is a mild contusion it takes around 4 to 6 weeks to recover. As the level of injury is at c2 and C3 from where nerves for upper arm comes, you'll have pain in your arm. It is due to nerve injury or any pressure on nerves. A minor injury to nerve will recover with time.

You have not mentioned what was there in MRI report. It is advisable to consult a neurosurgeon with MRI. He will help you with further diagnosis and treatment.

Right now to reduce pain you can take some analgesics prescribed by your doctor.

Hope this helps.

If you have any other queries, feel free to ask.

Regards,
Dr.Prathap Kumar
