What Causes Persistent Phlegm Filled Cough Despite Antibiotic Treatment?
been suffering with a cough spitting up a lot of clear flem. sometimes it chokes me . been to drs 3 time each time another prescription. now im on doxycycline hyclate 100 mg and cough syrup. little better but still have cough and flem in throat 2 more days of meds. Iv read this med is no good for viral going on is that true, dr said its a viral thing going on.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you child have persistent phlegm filled cough despite antibiotic is due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. The infection is probably a strep throat. post nasal drip can also cause such symptoms. I would suggest you to start with course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Avoid giving cold beverages. You should take mast cell stabilizers to prevent from infection. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. You should get an x ray of the chest. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for 10 days along with mucolytic agents . For now do warm saline rinses , take rest. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods. .
