What Causes Persistent Right Sided Pain In The Shoulder?

Hello, I have a pain on my right shoulder blade, it feels like I have a bad paper cut. I am not sure if I pulled a muscle or what. The pain ranges from a 7 to 8 on the pain scale. I can move my arm with no pain. There is a consistent pain from my should blade to under my right arm. I am not currently covered by an medical insurance due to not being employed at this time.

Hi,
I understand your concern quite well
First of all I want to tell you that a right shoulder blade pain could be caused of: gallstones, liver cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, rupture of an abdominal organ: stomach, appendix, spleen, ovary or ovarian tube (in ectopic pregnancy).
Based on your symptoms( because you didn't refer to me of another symptom that associate it) and before you see a specialist( cause you told me that you're not covered by a medical insurance) , I suggest you to start with some home remedies:

1. Activities that cause or exacerbate shoulder blade pain should be avoided, but do some shoulder exercises.
2.Please maintain proper posture
3. Try OTC pain relievers such as Ibuprofen , Tylenol or naproxen.
4. Apply an ice pack for 15-20 minutes to decrease the pain and inflammation. For muscle spasm, heat may provide quality relief and decrease pain. Try alternating between heat and cold, as there is no right or wrong answer here; do what feels best and alleviates discomfort.

But, you should see a doctor, if this pain doesn't go away and is severe because it will require an evaluation from him, expecially if you will experience chest pain or tightness, trouble breathing your right shoulder appears tender, red or swollen or other symptoms.

hope this will help you
Dr. Ermira Biu
