What Causes Persistent Sharp Pain Behind The Strenum?

Hello,Onset of painful swallowing 09/09/16 became progressively worse and constant as of yesterday. I cannot eat or swallow anything without sharp pain behind my sternum. I do not have any burning pain, but I do have pain that will radiate across the front of my chest. I work outside installing billboards. I tried to lift equipment yesterday and had weird sensation in both of my arms, similar to feeling of weakness but i didn t drop anything. Today I went to the ER and the performed EKG, chest xray and blood work that were all normal and unremarkable. The ER doctor thought it is musculoskeletal. I went to a chiropractor yesterday and was examined and they didn t find anything that reproduced or increased my pain. They recommended I have an xray with Barium contrast. I still have pain and difficulty swallowing after IV ibuprofin this morning at the ER. ER doctor wants me to follow up with my PCP. Liver enzymes were WNL. Could it still be gall bladder related or GERD?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It seems you are suffering from oesophagitis. At this point, I cannot say for sure what caused it.

There are different etiologies of Oesophagitis, it could be due to chemical(drugs) that irritate esophagus mucosa, it could be an infection.

If your symptoms do not improve in 3-4 days then I suggest that you see a doctor for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saralkumar R. Desai, General & Family Physician
